I started playing guitar when I was 10 because I saw Def Leppard on MTV and thought they were awesome. I spent the next few years playing music that any normal confused, pre-pubecent boy growing up in the 90s would play. That music quickly started becoming extremely heavy as I progressed through my teens. For example, instead of going to my Senior Prom, I drove down to San Diego with my buddy, Gabe Rosales, to see our friend Dan Castillo’s band Vomit open up for Suffocation. It was fucking awesome.

For a couple of years after high school, I somehow got into funk, jazz, and fusion, and jammed every single night with Gabe and our friend Maximillion Vega. That went on until I had a massive awakening about the way I was living my life and handling my health. I decided to quit playing music and started to focus on getting my health and spiritual life put together. I immediately started eating very healthy foods, doing yoga, and meditating every day. I even went on to become a yoga teacher, but that is another story. After about six months of “quitting music”, I decided to start up again with a fresh new perspective. Instead of playing electric guitar, I moved over to the acoustic guitar and focused in on song writing and singing.

In 2002, I met Ard Matthews – front man of the South African band Just Jinjer – and ended up joining their band. I went from teaching yoga and playing acoustic shows in small coffee shops in Laguna Beach, to playing electric guitar in South Africa’s biggest rock band, literally over night. It was a bit of a shock for an introverted person like myself, but I made it out alive. I toured with them throughout South Africa, London, and the US for two years, and then left the band because i felt that it was not my path.

I then went on to focus on my own music and recorded my debut album (Look Inside) in 2006. It ended up winning an award in the Los Angeles Music Awards for best Adult Alternative Americana Album of the Year in 2006. Not a bad way to start. I spent the next few year playing shows, writing songs, recording songs, and then ended up making a live DVD with fellow Laguna-in, Matt Russell and his company SongCheck Live. I got a great band together (Nate Wood, his wife Jesske Hume, Sean Woolstenhulme, and Tyler Chester) and we recorded live at The Coach House in San juan Capistrano on March 30th, 2008. The DVD (SongCheck Live Presents Alec Bridges Live at The Coach House) was released in June, 2009.

During all this music making, I continued my yoga and meditation practices, and became very interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture, herbs, and all that cool stuff). So much so in fact, I started going to school for it at Yo San University in Los Angeles, CA. Being a full time medical student is no easy task, so I have played very few shows over the past couple of years, but 2012 saw the release of my second studio album, In A Stream.
