Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

By looking at the CD cover and back especially I figured I would put this in and be transported to the 80s. Not so. This California band has a very current sound. At times they remind me of Tanya Donnelly’s old band Belly (I know they’re not exactly current, but they’re not Flock of Seagulls, ok).

Crushing Velvet is Chyanna Davis and Tom Diekmeier. They are truly DIY musicians. Chyanna sings lead had a hand in writing every song on here (most with Tom) while Tom also produced and mixed the songs. The CD is filled with wailing guitars, cool drumbeats, and funky vocals at times with nice harmonies.

My favorite song on this CD is “Maze” has a lovely spooky feel to it with its heartbeat background and sultry vocals.

“Hurt Myself” also has a haunting feel and this is the track that most reminds me of Belly.

If you like your pop mixed with dreamy stuff you’ll like Crushing Velvet.
