Bio
Writing a bio is a trying experience. You’re supposed to capture the essence of your music and what you’re all about with measly little words. Then take into account that you have to write about YOURSELF and that is a pretty hard thing to do, especially when the music comes out of your own crazy head. Here’s my best shot…
Haven James has been together in some form or another since 2004. Guitar players have come and gone (Joe Bauman, Bob Hermes), bass players (Pete Laing, Joe Citarello), even drummers (Drew Tedford). I miss them all and still consider them amongst my favorite people but life has led them elsewhere.
I am Jen Powelson(lead vocals/guitar). Singing is the love of my life. I’ve been here since the beginning, and am still here. Now I am joined by Alfred Korn(guitar/vocals), David Marshell (bass), and Becky Dalke (drums/vocals) and I’m in love with each and every one of them.
The one constant in Haven James is the music. Female fronted (and drummed), harmony laden, and acoustic based is the general idea. We all love it, love writing it, love playing it. We like to have laugh, and write music, and play shows, and drink wine. We try not to take it too personal or too seriously (though that can be a hard thing to do when it’s your voice on the line).
We’ve done lots of way cool stuff, that’s probably not too impressive to you, but it made our respective days. We opened for Goo Goo Dolls at Cricket Pavillion, Michelle Branch at Tempe Town Lake, shared a stage with Matisyahu and the Flaming Lips at McDowell Mountain Music Festival, opened for Sophie B. Hawkins at Sage Court, Steve Poltz at the Compound (my favorite night!), played a couple shows at US Airways in the summer of 2011 at the Phoenix Mercury halftime shows, met way too many awesome people (Phoenix Suns Coach, Alvin Gentry!) and had way too much fun.
We play original music and we play cover music, and we try not to get too caught up in either one. We are big supporters of the Phoenix music scene and especially of AZ Chicks With Picks and female musicians (it’s a man’s world and it ain’t easy ya’ll!) I love going to see other artists and being inspired by my friends, it’s my favorite part.
So that’s the basic gist. Your love and support makes us happy and it means a great deal every time you come see us, or listen to our music, or anything to let us know that what we do means something.
