Recipient for Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year – 13th Annual LA Music Awards
Jennifer Starr writes and produces her own music. Music Connection Magazine gave her demo CD, Thanks for Waiting, the 5th highest rating for the entire year out of 9000 entrants. Xfactor voted her into the top 40 in Los Angeles. The LA Music Awards nominated her for Singer/Songwriter of the Year!
Inspired by early R&B legends of the ’60s and ’70s, Jennifer Starr grew up singing along with her radio. She cultivated her silky-smooth vocals in an R&B band, Flashpoint, who toured the San Francisco Bay Area. She now enjoys recording and performing her original music in Los Angeles.
It is no surprise that Jennifer finds herself beginning to make her mark in the music industry. After all, how many can claim that the musical lineage in their family runs back to famed Scottish bagpipe player Harry Lauder? (He was famous, honest!)
The youngest of 11, Jennifer and her siblings victimized many a carpet, dancing and singing their way through childhood in St. Paul, Minnesota. Family favorites like Aretha Franklin, Parliament, Prince, and George Benson, have had a profound influence on Jennifer’s musical development. A dramatic soprano, she comfortably commands a four-octave range!
The January 2003 issue of Music Connection declared their top 25 demos of the past year. Over 9000 entrants were given a listen and Jennifer’s demo had the 5th highest score for all of 2002! New Music Weekly named Jennifer among the “one’s to watch for 2003!” Al Bowman, of the Los Angeles Music Awards, declared Jennifer to be a top contender for “best female singer/songwriter” for the November 2003 Awards. Take listen, and read her reviews…
The title to her demo CD, “Thanks for Waiting,” hints at the tremendous obstacles she has had to overcome to get to where she is now, performing at various LA hotspots! A car accident left Jennifer wheelchair bound for several years. She fought her way back, defied the odds, and is now pursuing her dream of a career in music. Her road back has not only added unusual depth to her songwriting, but an unwavering resolve to achieve her dreams. This resolve is evident in her demo CD where she acted as sole songwriter, singer and producer.
Jennifer’s current goal is to secure a recording contract. She looks forward to the release of her full length CD under the guidance of her new record label.
“I feel I went through what I did for a reason. I have found my voice. Through my music, I hope to inspire people to believe that anything is possible! It was doubtful that I’d walk again and now I’m dancing! When acting I made someone else’s words come to life. I really loved it but I was just a passenger on a creative plane. With my music, my voice, my words, I get to fly the plane.
Maybe I can help someone out there in a similar circumstance. We should never give up and throw in the towel. No one should walk away from their dream simply because the road becomes rough. I have a clarity and love for life now that would never have been possible if I hadn’t been in the accident. I have a beautiful baby girl and an amazing husband who fill my life with love. There was a time when I thought happiness would never be mine. I want to get that across to people. Love is simplicity and must be a priority! Without it, we have nothing. People have to come first, everything else is icing in the cake!”
