ARTMAKING

*NECTAR

“NECTAR is a professional-level artist’s forum highlighting relevant social themes through the ARTS and EDUCATION.”

Cybil is the Artistic Director and founder of NECTAR; Santa Barbara’s newest and boldest creative forum started in October 2008. Every 3-4 months artists are asked to reflect on a relevant and “charged” theme using their artistic medium of choice (dance, photography, visual art, theatre, poetry, music and more). This investigation culminates in an evening length forum. In some of the evenings, the work of a specific non-profit will be highlighted and a portion of the proceeds will go to support their work. NECTAR is growing in love and popularity every day. NECTAR has collaborated with The Glendon Association, The Central Coast Doulas, The Santa Barbara Birth Center, Yoga Soup, Art Without Limits, All For Animals, Hospice of Santa Barbara, The Threshold Choir, The Community Counseling and Education Center, Transition House and over 200 independent artists. NECTAR is in-residence at Yoga Soup (www.yogasoup.com), in Santa Barbara, CA.

NECTAR is an umbrella member with Art Without Limits and works under its fiscal receivership to apply for grants and receive donations. AWOL is a 501(c)(3) and insures the work of NECTAR as well as supporting its artistic growth and intention. Any donations or financial contributions can be made by contacting Cybil directly or by contacting Art Without Limits (www.artwithoutlimits.com).

Cybil Gilbertson received the 2009 Santa Barbara Art’s Collaborative “Direct-to-Artist-Grant” She also received the Santa Barbara County Art Grant in 2011 to support her evolving artistry and directorship of NECTAR and it’s community-centered vision.

*VISUAL ART

Growing up in Berkeley, California, Cybil was constantly surrounded by art. One of her favorite things to do as a child was finger paint. Her mother tells her she would spend hours with her easel and paints while her record player blasted musical favorites such as “Bob the Blob,” “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “Free To Be You and Me.” She has explored many mediums, but finds that watercolor and Sharpies are amongst her current favorites. Cybil studied art while at Alameda High School and also at UCSB, Santa Barbara Adult Education and The Esalen Institute.

Her work has been shown at UCSB Unplugged/UCSB Department of Dance, PULSE Santa Barbara, Burningman, and most recently at her one-woman-show, HIEROPHANT, at Arcobaleno Fair Trade/French Press Coffee on State Street in Santa Barbara.

One of Cybil’s favorite things to “play” with is the combining of text and images. In January 2010, she completed a small, 14-page, hand-illustrated key-ring book called, “FRESH BREATH INTO THE CLASSROOM; MEDITATION TOOLS FOR TEACHERS” to help classroom teachers, and teachers of all types, return to breath, stay present and integrate pieces of meditation and awareness into their daily lives and careers. This book was created for Professor Barbara Stein-Stover of Alliant International University to use as an instructional aid at the International Educators Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii (2010). Copies of “FRESH BREATH” are available for sale.
